Sessions will normally be via video conferencing using Zoom or Google Meet. You will be sent a video meeting link via email when an appointment booking is confirmed. All you need is internet or network coverage and a device with a screen, video and audio. You do not need to install Zoom, the link will work on a web browser. Just before the appointment, click on the Zoom link in the email. If you have any issues, you can call me on my mobile which will be provided at the time of booking an appointment. You can request a phone call instead of video conferencing, if you would prefer.

My belief is that each individual is the best expert on themselves. Therefore, my goal in counseling is to help you become self-sufficient, so you can live your life and thrive. How long this process will take will depend on your unique needs and preferences. Some issues are more short-term and goal driven, and these may require fewer sessions. Others are more complex and may involve healing, recovery and rebuilding; these may require more sessions. The number of sessions will depend on your specific needs and goals.

Accessing counselling is the first step, and for some the hardest. Engaging with the counselling process and being ready to do the deep work if needed, is the next step. Finally, applying strategies, utilising tools, and maintaining consistency in adopting new approaches, when necessary, are essential for achieving sustained and positive change.

A GP referral is not required. However, if there is information that you or your GP would like me to know, a letter or a referral can be provided. While counsellors are not required to report back to the referrer like psychologists are, if you would like a report, I can provide one with your consent and at a fee.

Counsellors are currently not covered under the Medicare Benefits Scheme. Therefore, these counselling sessions are not eligible for Medicare rebates. There is currently a government consultation underway to consider including counsellors in the Medicare scheme. However, no changes have been announced yet.
Some considerations are that a) counselling sessions with counsellors are not recorded in your My Health Record; b) most psychologist fees are higher than the Medicare rebate and the extra is not dissimilar to some counsellors' fees; c) there is no restriction on the number of counselling sessions that you can access, unlike under a MHCP.

While there can be overlap, counsellors generally provide therapeutic support for emotional, behavioural and relational issues. They tend to focus on mental and emotional wellbeing and improving quality of life. Psychologists generally can have a focus on psychological and neuropsychological testing, and diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and disorders.
